Breathe In, breathe out Biophilic Design 🤎 • Coming from the word Biophilia - meaning love of Nature. This design concept is about creating calming environments that improve wellbeing by focusing on natural light, natural materials and a use of landscape and plants. • With a BSc in Environmental Science thinking about sustainable design is always a priority for my interior projects. You’ll hear me talk a lot about choosing linens, cotton and wool fabrications over polyesters or polyamide fabrics. Working with paints that are Zero VOC and sourcing furniture from pre loved sources. • The Sunny Cove project was no exception. “But what you don’t know is that that cow is not just blue, it’s not Turquoise, it’s not even Lapis, it’s actually Cerulean.” • Restoring Elvis the Highland Cow so it was perfect for my clients home was so much fun. It started life as a flat digital print in shades of purple. Swatch boards are such a vital part of the design process… Computer and phone screens can often skew how colours of paints, wallpapers and fabrics look, so I always order swatches before committing to purchasing anything. • I start with the flooring as often you have to work with what you’ve got. Straight from Jamaica, come #bts of the San Souci hotel here in Ocho Rios to see how they mastered beach house interior style. • With ‘Colonial’ interior style having somewhat become an outdated description, it can sometimes be a tricky topic to talk about. Yet, its characteristics are emblematic of so many buildings found across the Caribbean and Southern American States. Think symmetrical architecture and gables, porches and shutters. BEFORE & AFTER Ayres House Master Bedroom by @umberinteriors • Monochromatic / Broken down to its Greek roots, the literal meaning is monos meaning “one” while krona means “colour”. • I love using monochrome colour palettes, however they can often be thought of as cold. But in a bedroom, there’s nothing better than a reserved and restful space to sleep. • We made the most of the internal architectural features, such as the dropped recess ceiling by creating a canopy above the bed. 📌 MOOD BOARD - Pet Supplies & Groomers by @umberinteriors • This project was all about zoning. We needed a shop counter, space for customers to wait while their dogs are being groomed, a wet room, window display and POS space for pet supplies. • Colour is a great tool for creating clearly defined areas. A change in tone helps the customers eyes digest everything they’re seeing, making it easier to know what they want to shop or where they need to go in the store to find it. • Following the coastal theme I designed a bespoke tiled sales counter with wooden counter top and dramatic lighting as a focal point. The baskets reminded me of Lobster pots. • I also designed bespoke built in cabinetry to display the myriad of dog grooming accessories, toys and foods the shop would sell. Shiplap wood reflects little beach huts. Whilst dog leads suspend drift wood from the ceiling to display leads and collars in the window. • In the wet room muted sea foam tones help to relax the dogs. 💡INSPIRATION… My clients recently bought a commercial property in Rochester and needed help creating a beautiful shop for their dog supplies and grooming service. • @umberinteriors was inspired by Kent's coastal location where my clients love to take long walks on the beach with their three Chocolate Labrador's. • We love the white wood of faded beach huts, soft shale and sandy greys, hints of greens from hardy dune grasses and soft sea and sky blues. • With a focus on organic elements, materials and textures it's about layering contrasting textures. On occasion @umberinteriors gets to design more than one room in a clients home. • Having cohesion of interior design throughout your home helps create a calming space in which to live. But you still want each room to have it’s own personality. Mix overhead and lower level lighting, this will help balance the light level around the room and ensure no corner is dark or dingy 2. Priorities were to create a haven at home, a welcoming and relaxing interior where they could destress after a long day working in the city. The room features vintage bamboo side tables, marble lamps, a Scandi four poster bed and layers of natural materials such as linen, sheepskin, cotton and wool. At @sonblancmenorca time follows the rhythm of Minorcan life. Nestled amongst nature, the architecture and interiors reflect this wild and rugged island. Large floor slabs support arch ways that lead under vaulted ceilings, up spiralling staircases to white washed rooms filled with ceramics, furniture and art all made locally on the island by skilled artisans. Let the beauty and opulence of the Arab Hall wash away this gloomy London day. While it’s door were closed to the public today, @umberinteriors got a private tour of Frederic Leighton’s House. The painter and later President of the Royal Academy, he built his home and studio in the late 1800’s. The Arab Hall inspired by La Zisa in Palermo is the altar at which Leighton worshiped his treasured antiques, tiles, friezes, ceramics and metalwork pieces loving collected over his lifetime. All around his home you can see architectural inspiration taken from Algiers, Turkey, Afghanistan and Egypt. Magic Majorelle Gardens 🌴🌵 Created by the French Orientalist artist Jacques Majorelle over almost forty years, starting in 1923, and features a Cubist villa designed by the French architect, Paul Sinoir in the 1930s. In the 1980s, the property was purchased by the fashion designers, Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé who worked to restore it. So, the challenge of matching this with an equal level of form was particularly interesting. Inspired by the clients photography publication, the windows are framed with apertures of tri-tone green. Located in the Salamanca district of Madrid, Francisco Alonso brought brutalist flights of fancy with giant stones balanced with the force of gravity over 30 years ago. It’s amazing what a lick of paint can do! 🎨 Painting can be the quickest and most affordable way to breathe new life a design into your home. We only needed a 2.5 ltr can for this whole room. In the Medway Guest Bedroom we made a feature of @lick 03 Red, painting up to an imaginary picture rail. Keeping the top fifth of the walls and ceiling in @lick 06 White gives the illusion of extra height, making this small room feel much bigger. Colour is also incredibly powerful and can help to evoke different emotions. Red is a warm colour and can evoke feelings of happiness, optimism, energy and coziness.
